Now Watching at Opera Club

*Special Day!* July 29th – Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti

A witty, jazz-infused one-act opera that takes a sharp look at suburban life, marriage, and the pursuit of the perfect American dream. Blending catchy Broadway-inspired tunes with heartfelt drama, it's a funny, poignant, and surprisingly modern classic. One session only!

August 5th - Opera 101

New to opera or just want to learn more? Join us for a fun and interactive introduction to the art form as Sarah Spurlin explores opera's history, voice types, storytelling, and what to listen for, making your next opera experience even more enjoyable!

What is Opera Club?

Opera Club is a relaxed, welcoming way to experience some of the greatest operas ever written. Led by soprano and music educator Sarah Spurlin, each session invites participants to watch, appreciate, and discuss the opera in a low-pressure environment. No prior opera knowledge required!

Think of it like book club… but with glorious music, fabulous costumes, and the occasional dramatic death scene.

What to expect:

  • We watch a full-length production of a well-known opera, broken into two sessions for an easier, more comfortable viewing experience (no need to sit in a theater for three hours!).

  • All showings include subtitles, so you never miss a word.

  • After each section, we share short video clips from other productions, highlighting modern twists, unusual stagings, or wildly creative interpretations. (Have you ever seen a La Bohème on the moon?!)

  • Along the way, we explore the history, cultural impact, and surprising pop culture connections of each opera. You may be shocked where opera shows up.

  • Most importantly, Opera Club is built around conversation: questions, reactions, laughter, curiosity, and shared moments of awe.

Who is Opera Club for?

Opera Club is open to adults of all experience levels—from first-time opera explorers to longtime fans. No background in music or opera is necessary, and you do not need to be an AWE member to attend.

Opera Club is free to attend and is offered in partnership with the Adult Wellness and Education Center (AWE) as part of Cimarron Opera’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and arts accessibility.

Opera Club is one of the many ways Cimarron Opera works to make opera approachable, engaging, and rooted in community.
